Mathilde, what were the circumstances surrounding your light eruption?

I had always spent my holidays at my parents' house at the seaside. One summer, when I was 18, I got small bumps on my neckline, forearms and shoulders accompanied by unpleasant itchiness. I thought I was having a one-off reaction to the sun. So I waited for the spots to go away and I continued to enjoy the sun for the rest of the summer.

Did the symptoms go away over time?

Not really...they got worse!
Because I love the sun, I always tend to take advantage of the faintest ray of sunlight as soon as the weather is fair. Each time I was in the sun, the reaction came more swiftly and was more severe with even more spots and itching! I ended up telling myself that my skin could no longer handle the sun and I might have to stay out of it for good.

Did you not find a solution?

In fact, I went to an online discussion group. Another Internet user told me she had the same problem as me: apparently it was called summer light eruption. She told me to go see a dermatologist. So I made an appointment and he prescribed an appropriate SPF 50+ sunscreen from a pharmacy. Now everything has been great for two years! (Even if I don't bake in the sun all day long!!!) In any event, after years of allergies, I can finally get back in the sun!

Laure, how did your sunburns happen?

Last summer I spent my holidays at the seaside. Because I wanted a tan, I exposed myself to the sun from the start of my holiday without really being careful. I even used monoi oil on my skin and I lounged in the sun all day… The result is that I ended up with extremely painful and severe sunburn!

What did it feel like?

My skin was burning and it even started peeling. I had to apply repair creams every night and wear a tee shirt at the beach even when I was swimming. It took several days to soothe the redness. The next summer, I swore to myself that I would not make the same mistakes! So before leaving on holiday, I scheduled an appointment with a dermatologist.

What did he recommend?

He recommended that I apply a 50+ sunscreen and re-apply every 2 hours and that I also limit my exposure, avoid it between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m. ...plus lots of other tips! Thanks to these little tips, I was able to get a tan this summer without any sunburn! So now I don't skimp any more on protection and I even wear a beach hat!"

Marie-Christine, what is your relationship with the sun?

I'm lucky enough to live by the sea. I have always thought that the sun is good for your health and well-being… Even after the birth of my children, changing my ways was out of the question. I have taken them to the beach ever since they were very little. However, because their skin is sensitive, I have always been very careful to ensure they do not get sunburn.

So how do you protect them?

To avoid all risk, I use 50+ sun protection creams 50+ and I simply exercise sound judgement. So, for starters, no sun during the hottest time of the day. Then I protect them with a cotton hat and tee-shirt. Without forgetting to apply sunscreen on a very regular basis (about three times per day). But my biggest concern is when they play at the beach. Because Simon and Jonathan love playing in the water, so far I have always felt obligated to rub them with cream every 10 minutes, which makes my afternoons tedious.

Do you intend to maintain this ritual?

Yes, I still intend to protect as much as ever, but I'm done with buying a tube of cream every two days! So, based on my pharmacist's recommendation, I am going to use a water-resistant sun lotion. Simon and Jonathan splash about in the sea without me having to apply cream every 10 minutes... They can play in the sun without me worrying!
